Painted Floral Serving Tray!

Last week, I started the Floral Serving Tray on a Facebook Live. I have been challenging myself to go live on Facebook every Wednesday at 1pm PST. The Craft and Chat Live Group on Facebook (click on the link to find the page and join) is still going at it and I took a few weeks off, but now I am back. Yesterday, I posted the video, “Easy to Make Floral Serving Tray.” I took parts of the Facebook Live and turned it into a You Tube video. I hope you enjoy it and decide to create a serving tray for yourself.

In this post, I am providing the written tutorial on how to create the “Easy to Make Painted Floral Serving Tray.” If you are looking for additional information on using Iron Orchid Designs decor transfer you can check out, “Tips on using Iron Orchid Designs Transfers on a Furniture Makeover.” Decor Transfers can be adhered on almost any surface. I’ve adhered decor transfers to pillows and mirrors and even vintage suitcases.

MATERIALS NEEDED TO CREATE AN EASY TO MAKE PAINTED FLORAL SERVING TRAY: 

• Wood Tray
• Paint and Wax or Top Coat. Use a top coat or wax prior to adhering the transfer. I used Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint in the colors of Vintage Linen and Hey Sailor and the White Wax.
• Iron Orchid Designs Decor Transfer. I used parts of Flora Parisiensis and parts Wall Flower.
• Frog Tape
• Scissors
• Soft rag

DIRECTIONS TO CREATE AN EASY TO MAKE PAINTED FLORAL SERVING TRAY:

Step one: Paint your tray. Be sure to include wax or a top coat as a finishing product. Decor Transfers will only stick to a sealed surface.

Step two: Decide which decor transfers you will use and cut them into pieces. I used scraps left over from other projects. Determine placement of decor transfer without removing back until you are certain of placement. Use frog tape to hold decor transfer in place while scrapping with tool provided. Scrape decor transfer onto surface. Once the transfer is adhered, remove the tape and the plastic paper. Use a soft cloth and burnish decor transfer on surface. This ensures there are no air bubbles between the transfer and surface.

Step three: If you prefer a worn and rustic look, use sand paper and sand the tray. I used a 220 grit sanding block.

Step four: Use top coat or wax and seal the transfer on the surface. One to two coats of top coat or wax is recommended.

DIY Sign – Welcome Home!

I remember the days when Luke and Troy would scribble on the easel. Here’s a cute drawing that Luke did and Troy creating on an easel at a museum.

Total aside: somehow, through all my photos I could not find Luke or Troy at the actual easel.

Many of you have little children at home, just as I did (mine really aren’t that little anymore)! This is a great video on You Tube that introduces the little ones or big ones, in your life to painting. Check out Dionne’s channel here.

You’ll notice that she also teaches classes on painting canvases and furniture. Now you get why I am attracted to her videos.

I followed along on Saturday, February 23rd’s version of Lil Ms. Iris and painted the ocean on canvas. It was a really fun process and I wanted to share it with you. Here is my final project.

Dionne and Iris paint every Saturday morning, but you can always go back and watch the videos at your leisure.

Even though my boys are grown I still strive to teach and show them the importance of art in their live.

Any paint can be used, but I like using a water soluble paint that contains no VOC’s. For this project I used DIY Chalk Paint by Debi’s Design Diary. You also need a squirt bottle and a canvas. You can use a brush or your fingers. Add paint, spray the canvas and turn the canvas, it’s really that simple and fun. Here is a picture half way through of my process. Can you see how the paint is dripping.
